Taj Mahal : Perhaps none of the other
historical monuments have evoked as much awe and admiration
from tourists and travelers alike, as the resplendent
Taj Mahal-fondly called by people as the ultimate symbol
of love, from a great Mughal Emperor to his beloved.
So overwhelming is the spectacular beauty and presence
of this marbled mausoleum that centuries later today,
even the very place where it has been located-Agra-has
been immortalized as the City of the Taj. The architectural
excellence of the mausoleums, the fort and the palaces
is a vibrant remainder of the mausoleums, the fort and
the palaces is a vivid reminder of the capital in the
capital in the 16th and early 17th centuries.
Agra Fort : Constructed by the great
Emperor Akbar in 1565 A.D. the fort is an exquisite
illustration of design and architecture. Within the
fort are a number of exquisite buildings, including
the Moti Masjid, Diwane-I-Am, Diwani-I-Khas and musanman
Burj, where the Emperor Shah Jahan died in imprisonment
besides jahangirs place, Khaas Mahal and the Sheesh
Mahal.
Itmad
- ud daula : (7km) Towards the north of the fort
and across the river yamuna are several fine examples
of Mughal architecture. The Itmad -ud -daula was constructed
by the empress Noor Jehan as a memorial to her father
Mirza Ghiyas Beg , is beautifully ornamented with pietra
dura inlay and lattice work marble screens.
Chini Ka Roza : The tomb of Afzal
Khan, the persian poet and minister at Shah Jehan's
court gets its name from the brightly colored glazed
tiles that adorn it . It lies just 1km beyond Itmad
-ud -daula.
Sikandara : 12 km the tomb of Akbar,
begun by the emperor himself and accomplished by his
son, Jehangir. This royal decorated structure is a deliberate
blend of styles.
Radhaswamy Satsang, Dayalbagh : This
highly ornate memorial to the founder of the Radhaswamy
satsang has been in the making for many years and is
still being worked upon. It is entirely in marble, upon
which every manner of ornamentation has been applied.
Fatehpur Sikri : A royal city perfectly
preserved, Fatehpur Sikri provides a marvelous rendezvous
with the past. Akbar embarked on the construction of
a new capital here when a prophecy of the birth of a
male royal heir, by the Sufi Saint Salim Chisti of Sikri,
came true.
